Arden Grange to change bag sizes

Like most premium dog food brands, arden grange will be changing from 15kg to 12kg bags, so we have decided to inform customers in advance using our new blog, so that customers can stock up to avoid any disappointment. After discussing the change with arden grange the rrp price per kg of the adult and puppy varieties will remain the same, except for the Arden Grange Lamb & Rice where the price will increase as unfortunately lamb is in short supply increasing the overall cost to manufacturer the dog food, so if you feed only the lamb and rice variety you are more likely to notice that your dog's monthly food cost has increased than the other varieties, so it might be worth considering a change to the adult chicken and rice instead!

As soon as we have further information regarding the change in bag sizes we will let you know, but we do expect the cost of Arden Grange Dog Food online to increase from all suppliers as the margin per bag will be reduced as a direct result of the change and the paper bags currently used will also change to allow the dog food to be exported more easily to other countries.

So if you have several dogs in your household it might be worthwhile stocking up, but we will let you know as soon as we have a firm date for the change!

How can I stop my dog chewing everything in the house?

Many owners react to a puppy or dog chewing furniture in the house, by removing as many chewable items they can from the dog's surroundings. While this is logical, you dog or puppy must learn what they are allowed to chew and of course not what not to chew in your house. You shouldn't stop you dog chewing, but channel their attention towards something they are allowed to chew such as rawhide dog chews or tough rubber toys like kongs as it's a natural behaviour for puppies and dogs.

Why do puppies and dogs chew?

There are three main reasons why dogs or puppies chew, that are outlined below:

Teething - Just like babies, puppies teethe which normally occurs between 14 to 28 weeks of age, depending on the breed and size of your puppy. Chewing serves two purposes, it helps soothe inflamed gums, providing comfort and relief, but most importantly helps loosen baby teeth allowing them to fall out and adult teeth to grow in their place.

Exploratory Chewing - Normally occurs between 28 to 52 weeks of age, where your puppy explores their surrounding by chewing objects using their mouths, in much the same way as a baby or toddler will use their hands.

Chew to Relief Stress - Chewing causes calming endorphins to be released, having a positive effect on relieving stress and anxiety. While your dog may not be the anxious type, your dog will know that chewing calms them down and gives them a sense of wellbeing, making them feel less stressful or anxious.

How do I stop my dog's destructive chewing behaviour?

While some owners may think that their dog or puppy has maliciously chewed something to spite them, it couldn't be further than the truth as dog's have no sense of the value of possessions, they just chew to explore and relief tension.

Instead of trying to stop chewing around your home, you should actively encourage your dog or puppy to chew those items that you are happy for them to chew on. So the first step is to teach your new puppy or dog to understand the difference between your possessions and theirs which they are allowed chew on without you screaming at them.

The easiest way to focus their attention on to what they should be chewing is by rewarding good behaviour with toys or chews, so that your favourite slippers seem less appealing. While there are no instant fixes, within a few days of following the advice below, owners should see positive results, but it's important to always focus on good chewing behaviour and not dwell on any mishaps.

1) Provide your dog with about 3 or 4 toys or rawhide chews, but make sure that each one is different to each other in size, texture and shape to create interest.

2) Play with your puppy or dog using the toys or chews, so that your dog learns to associate them with having fun, so that if your dog or puppy is left alone with the chews they are more likely to choose them in favour to your possessions.

3) Most puppies and dogs can be trained more easily by using treats to reward behaviour, so make sure that at least one of the chew toys is hollow to allow you to stuff it with treats or food, to encourage them to focus on the chew rather than anything else they shouldn't.

4) Remove you most valuable items from your dog's reach to avoid unnecessary expense.

5) To limit any destructive chewing behaviour, keep your dog confined to one area or room, if necessary using a play pen or dog crate.

6) Whenever you see your dog or puppy chewing their toys or chews, praise them to reinforce the positive behaviour, but try to avoid interrupting their chewing with too much praise, as we don't want their attention to be drawn away from the chews or toys.

7) When you catch your dog or puppy chewing something they shouldn't, make sure you have their attention and firmly say NO, then immediately get a toy or rawhide chew for them and praise them if they start to chew on it.

8) Lastly the most important thing to remember is to keep things positive and reward good behaviour at all times, treating any mistake along the road as your fault, not your puppies or dogs for not teaching them right from wrong to avoid negative feelings.

How do I choose a dog food that's healthy?

Just like people the benefits of eating a balanced diet will help your dog remain healthy and active. So what should you look for to avoid feeding your dog a food that's the equivalent of fast food? i.e. burger and chips! Thankfully now comparisons between competing dog food brands is easier thanks to the internet as most manufacturers have websites that list the ingredients for each flavour or variety of dog food they make.

Also due to new regulations regarding the labelling of ingredients on pet food, if a manufacturer states that it contains glucosamine for joint health there must be enough glucosamine in percentage terms to have a beneficial effect for your dog or growing puppy, otherwise the manufacturer may get a knock at the door from trading standards.

When selecting a food look at the typical analysis section and ingredients list to establish what's in the food to make direct comparisons more easily and familiarise yourself with the benefits of minerals, vitamins and supplements in your chosen pet food. So what should look out for and what should I really try to avoid?

Protein Source

Look on your bag of food or manufacturers website and see if you food contains human grade chicken, lamb or fish meal found in most premium dog foods or animal derivatives which may contain hidden unsavoury fillers like feet, heads, feathers, hooves and wool or even bakery products.

Fats

Now you have established what protein is used in the food, look at the type of animal fat that's used in the recipe for instance fats such as chicken, poultry or fish oil are often used by premium manufacturers such as arden grange, burns and wafcol. But try to avoid foods that contain ingredients such as beef tallow and lard, that are tasty to dogs but are high in saturated fats, low essential fatty acids and low in digestibility.

Carbohydrates

Next examine the ingredients list and see if the food contains whole grains and if it's wheat gluten free. Cheap foods will often not specify exactly what you are feeding and use the term cereal derivatives, that is not useful if you are trying to avoid triggering a food related allergy or sensitivity.

Fibre

Look at the ingredients list closely and see if a food contains any of the following; corn bran, peanut hulls, rice hulls, soybean hulls or oat hulls that are not good sources of fibre and best to avoid in all honesty. But beet pulp that used by many premium brands is a good fibre source for both soluble and insoluble fibre allowing the growth of friendly bacteria in the large intestine, feeling of being satisfied and gastrointestinal transit helping to avoid stomach upsets.

Vitamins and minerals

Examine what vitamins and minerals are listed on the bag of food or website, such as Vitamin C, E and beta carotene that are powerful antioxidants that will help provide protection against free radicals or if chelated minerals such as copper, zinc, iron or selenium are used in preference as they are more easily absorbed in the gut.

Supplements

Cheap foods will often exclude beneficial supplements like prebiotics, nucleotides, cranberry extract, glucosamine, chondrotin, msm and yucca extract or contain only enough to allow health benefits claims to be legal, so it's advisable to look a both the levels and types of supplements used in your dog or puppy food to make an informed decision.

Naturally preserved

The last point maybe obvious to some owners, who take more than a parsing look at the packaging on supermarket shelves, but see if the food is naturally preserved, free from artificial colourings and flavourings as your dog food should ideally not be brightly coloured.

Purely for guidance, we recommend that you visit the following pages of our website to view details of the following dog food brands that offer value for money when compared with some premium foods, for example Arden Grange Dog Food, Burns Dog Food and Wafcol Dog Food
